So for the past month or so I've been pondering the fact that soon, I will probably have to get a new car. I wanted to be able to drive this one for a longer time, but...it's a 98 with 130K on it and I just see the writing on the wall, I have the sense that catastrophic mechanical failure is imminent

as long as you're doing your maintenance on time (e.g. oil, filter, tranny) and things on-time then major mechanical failure is NOT likely, but what IS likely is that you'll start getting nickel and dimed.

however, barring that major failure, the nickel and diming should level off and be "constant."
