Cleaning is a dangerous business.

I think I almost just became the world's first bathroom-cleaning-related fatality.

I am the not-so-proud possessor of that vilest of household accoutrements: a fiberglass tub with a non-skid bottom. That's all well and good except that they get dirty in a heartbeat and it's damned near impossible to get clean. I've scrubbed and scrubbed and it still looks dingy. I once emptied three gallons of bleach into a tub half full of hot water, let it sit for three hours and drained it...and it was still dingy.

I thought tonight I'd try Soft Scrub with Bleach. I like Soft Scrub. Does a heckuva job on the kitchen sink. So I liberally slathered the tub with it and started scrubbing.

Cut to me, five minutes later, staggering out of the bathroom having nearly asphyxiated on the bleach fumes. Good God.

But I wasn't done scrubbing. I had to dart into the bathroom and scrub furiously for three minute intervals and then retreat to the bedroom to recover. I let it sit for an hour or so, to let the fumes dissipate a bit, then went back and scrubbed it clean.

It worked pretty well. It's still not snow white perfect, but it's better than anything else I've tried on it. And I bet if I did it again in a few days it'd get even better.

I'll wear a gas mask next time.
