I agree with you about the mood change in PotC; the first one was much more light-hearted. I am, however, eagerly awaiting the next one. When "Dead Man's Chest" ended, I actually sat there for a second thinking, "What? It's over?! But--but--but-- there's more story!!"
Of course, the fact that I had so much fun when I saw DMC might have to do with having gone with a huge group of people all dressed up as pirates. *grin*
Yuck. I hated Hero. I guess I really am a Jet Li purist who only likes his older stuff... like his Once Upon a Time in China series (who the heck named that for the American consumers anyway? It has nothing to do with the original title).
Anyway, Jet Li is actually a busy daddy now (he turned down Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon because he swore not to leave his wife at home during her pregnancy), so that might be why he's, um, retiring?
With the caviat that I do not belong to the "Elf-Candy Lust Party" (I'm a pervie hobbit fancier, myself), I will say that Orlando does better in some stuff than others. I own Troy, but found Eric Bana to be the standout in it. I did, however, REALLY like Kingdom of Heaven (I own the director's cut) and thought that he did well in it. Is he the strongest actor in the world? No, but he is fun to watch.
As to Jet Li: from what I hear (from friends more in the know on the martial arts movie scene), Jet has reached the point where the inguries outweigh the money to be made making martial arts movies. Since he does his own stunts, he gets ingured quite alot. It is thought that he will now try to make a name for himself in straight dramatic roles. I'm not sure how successful he will be. He's a great fighter, but doesn't have the natural comedic timing that Jackie Chan has or the natural acting talent of Michelle Yeoh or the general Cool factor of Chow Yum Fat.
I am the say with movies. If my friends really liked it, and I didn't, I'll refrain from any comments about the movie. Heh.
Also, don't know why "Fearless" is Jet Li's final martial arts epic, but I've already seen it. Has been out in China for a while. Not anywhere close to as good as "Hero" or CT:HD. It did have some really, really good fight choreography though.
Ha! When I watched Dead Man's Chest, I let it slip rather loudly "He really can't act, can he?" about Orlando, and guess what? No teeny squeals of indignation whatsoever. People agreed. He's so bad in this movie, worse than usual. Why do they keep giving him roles he can't pull off? Imho, he can do exactly two: pathetic boy (the mortally afraid Paris, so good) and bubbly type-casted boy. They really really should type-cast him more. When he's being himself, he's so pretty and charming and cute like a kitten or a bunny wabbit or something, and they should put it to good use, dangit.
