Mmm, christmas cookies... I need someone to bake me christmas cookies.

Anyways, I'm only on part 2 of The Golden Compass, but I won't be reading it for a few days, have to read A Feast for Crows, now. Just, whatever you do! Don't spoil the ending without a cut or something!

It's funny... last year, with PoA, I had one other friend who wanted to see a Harry Potter movie with me. This year, with GoF, I have about four or five, calling ME to go see it with them. Guess they took it to heart when I told them to read these books or die. Peer pressure.

well w00t! for reading His Dark Materials. lol. and as for the movie, we readers must go with an open mind and understand that hollywood has a bit of trouble in the whole book to movie transition. (characters get lost along the way. people die who aren't supposed to. really bad cg. the list goes on...)Anyway, it is always interesting to see how they attempt to bring the book to life.

I love the Dark Materials trilogy. I finished reading it over the summer and joined some LJ communities in search of other fans. But I don't think any of them are active ( ... )

Uh oh, I hope I didn't spoil you with this comment. You said you knew how the book ends, but I don't know if you know everything.

And I haven't even met Will yet, technically...although I've read parts of Spyglass so I've seen him.

Just to let you know it's out there, Lori...

The way I was introduced to the trilogy was through the audio versions. Put out by Listening Library, a division of Random House, they are unabridged and - in a step outside the box - done with a full cast. Steven Webb, who voices Will, almost broke my heart with his sensitive and well-acted delivery in "The Subtle Knife" (the best of the three books, IMO)

I remember taking off in Minneapolis and landing in New York, mad because the trip wasn't long enough. That's how good they are. Excellent, really excellent!

As for sending it to the big screen...I'm not sure I WANT to see it visualized, since it's going to be a whole lotta CGI, which can either work brilliantly (like Gollum) be annoying (think Jar-Jar) or just be totally creepy (Polar Express, anyone?)

It may very well be one of those adaptations that CAN'T happen effectively because too much of the action is internal/philisophical/spiritual. The train wreck that was "A Wrinkle in Time" comes to mind. :-P

I still feel like sobbing when I think about the ending of His Dark Materials. It was a great series, though.

To help cope with the ending, I wrote a fanfic and that helped a little, but I never posted it anywhere other than my journal as there didn't seem to be any active communities for the fandom.

I'm unsure of whether the series would successfully translate to film. I agree, the daemon part will be so crucial to getting it right.

Will is one of my literary crushes. You're going to love him!

I already love him. Anyone who says "I love her more than anyone has ever been loved before" at TWELVE is cool.
