I've not had the chance to even get past Chapter 15 yet, and I am actually liking it - despite the things I'm being forced to read on portkey while moderating there. Your analysis of the book is quite good, and I've gotten a few requests from members to compile up a list of good analysis like that and post them OR to link to them.
If it's okay with you, would you like to post on Portkey's Forums about this ?
I hope you won't mind my quoting portions of your wonderful analysis in my own LJ, even though I have to disagree with you on whether I liked HBP or not.
My major issue with HBP lies more in the way it was written and put together. Unfortunately, to my mind, the "romance" aspects did not have the same care and craftsmanship that were given to what you pointed out was the central theme of the book- that of Harry being mentored by Dumbledore to become the hero he should be.
Given the emphasis in OotP and HBP on love as "the power he knows not," I found the rather shallow development of the romance aspects (granted, they are 'teenage relationships') a jarring counterpoint to the care and development given to the 'central' theme of HBP.
Which leads me to wonder whether all this jazz about 'the power he knows not' as being *the* red herring in the books.
But thank you very much for your very insightful comments on the book as a whole.
thank you...I am right there with you. I love shipping, but that's not the reason why I love the books. Plus, completely implausible ships exist without any canon to back them up, but that doesn't stop people from enjoying them, now does it? Grrr...the backlash against the ship plotlines is really annoying the crap out of me, but I just have to keep a rational head about it or I'm just as bad, ya know? That is one thing I have always loved about your PoA series...Harry and Hermione don't really have much basis in canon, but you make them getting together PLAUSIBLE. It has good reasons to happen. It is a natural progression of their relationship. It doesn't mean either of them love Ron any less, or Ginny. You were able to make it real in my head, even though I'm a Ron/Hermione girl first. You didn't try to tie it to little crumbs of misinterpreted canon, you just made it work in a real life sort of sense. I don't think I've ever given you feedback on that, but excellent job. :)
d'oh!!...PoA...I so had the books on my mind. Everyone obviously knows that I meant PoU. *is retarded* Apparently all my available brainpower is going to theorizing about what will happen in book 7.
