Someone told me it's all happening at the zoo

Today I spent nearly all day at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium (the #1 zoo in America, lest you forget it for one single second) with cruisedirector and her family. Between the holiday and the rainy weather, we had the place just about to ourselves, it was pretty awesome. And it really barely rained on us at all. Many of the animals were active or at least ( Read more... )

He was adorable to the max. He lives in the same enclosure with the koalas, who do nothing but sleep, but that little guy was booking it around the place like he was late for a meeting with the boss. And he totally had echidna!face!

Grizzly bears are basically a variety of brown bear, and not the biggest one (that's the Kodiak brown bear, I think).

I love the Columbus Zoo. I can't believe how much it's changed since I used to go there as a kid.

I went to the zoo today too! It was a lovely day here so I went w/my sister & her family to the Philadelphia Zoo. Which is old and fairly small (some of the animals you describe we don't have here) but we had a great day.

We go early because then it's more likely that the animals will be awake and active. Among the recent babies was a giraffe and an orangutan - who was just too cute as he made a nest of the hay material they give them and a blankie before settling down for a nap. :) And the lorakeets you can give sugar water to is just too neat for words - they perch right on your hand!

Wow, I really want to go to the zoo now. And I love this, because it's so true: "And zoo staff must just live for that look of wonder on a little boy's face when he gets to touch the snake..." I was, err, for want of a better word, putting up with a bunch of pretty jaded first graders (I was just out of high school, nervous, and quite rightfully not at all respected) but seeing them get to touch certain animals they'd only ever read about before (in between yelling at them to sit down and use one hand of course) was pretty amazing.

Remind me to tell you of my mom's experience with Colo when I was 3 or 4 years old. Awesome and kinda scary.
