Is this the Droid I'm looking for?

TracFone works fine as long as I don't need support, but my phone is getting old and they make it painful to replace your phone and keep the same number, so I'm looking at alternatives. It appears that I can get a T-Mobile prepaid plan for $100 a year with enough minutes to cover my light usage, and can get an Android phone to go with it for a ( Read more... )

When I looked at the T-Mobile site earlier, it appeared to me that it was possible to combine an Android with a prepaid plan. For some reason, my browser can't even find t-mobile.com right now. I'll double-check later.

The site (or the DNS lookup) is working again. Here's the prepaid plan page, which says I can get 1 year and 1000 minutes for $100. Texting is a bit steep at a dime a message, but I do hardly any of it. There are no roaming charges, which is important to me as I split my time between two states; I've seen some plans with really outrageous roaming rates. The Android phone selection includes phones under $200. What isn't clear is whether an Android without a data plan is anything but an expensive dumb phone.

Well, I have a very similar setup from AT&T. For my pay as you go, $100 dollars of minutes lasts a year (though minutes do cost an exorbitant amount to use, but it's worth it if you don't use much). And whichever phone you buy, though prices are much higher on phones if you're not buying a contract. I went with a $15(!!) dollar phone (and it's worth every penny - and not a penny more). AT&T is definitely not most folks choice and I'm keeping my eyes open and check other things out often. The best part you already see, which is that when I've had issues the folks in the stores have helped me much more than the ones over the phone or online. Any of the ones with storefronts will probably give you that though. I know nothing about the android situation. I'll be watching your quest and taking notes for my future consideration :).

Another thing you may want to keep in mind is that T-Mobile is being bought up by AT&T, so the prices may change soon. My Mom had the T-Mobile $100 prepaid plan and it worked well for her. She had money/minutes left over at the end of the year even after using the phone quite a bit.
