She takes a week to freak out and mourn by herself.  Since she left his house, Sofie hasn't spoken to Logan.  She skipped football and gymnastics the rest of the week, unsure how those things would...affect her now.  Thankfully, with finals coming up and it being flu season, avoiding her parents hasn't been as hard as you'd suspect. Taryn's not stupid. She's noticed Sofie's isolation, the excuses, the sleeping in...the lack of Logan. But that's exactly what she chalks it up to. The two of them were very into each other and it makes sense, at least to Taryn, that this apparent break-up would be hard on Sofie. But she and Noah have never been the type of parents to push their children to talk when they weren't ready, and Sofie had always come to them eventually. She had no reason to suspect otherwise ( ... )

Sofie watches her parents from the bottom of the stairs, biting the inside of her cheek until she tastes blood. She can't help but see the similarities here, between the night Stu showed up and now. Maybe all of the defining moments of her life will occur this way, standing at the bottom of the stairs.

Her Dad grins, eyes sparkling and she can tell that there's not a thing wrong in his world right now. And she hates herself, suddenly. Because she's going to ruin that. She's going to tell him about this stupid decision that she made and it's just going to fuck everything up even more.

She's sure Taryn's expecting some story. Some preamble, some "Dad, sit down". But Sofie knows that if she doesn't say it right now, she won't. She'll get sick, or start crying and Taryn will have to tell and that's not fair to either of her parents. So when Daddy says "What's up?" she cuts right to the chase, head hanging a little. She doesn't even bother to lift it, just looking up enough so that she can meet her father's eyes ( ... )
