'Sometimes the greatest journey is the distance between two people'. The tagline to 'The Painted Veil', with Edward Norton and Naomi Watts, hooked me, and although I got little else out of watching 'Amazing Grace' on DVD, the trailer before the 'feature presentation' inspired me to rent this DVD and buy a copy of the book it was based on. I've wanted to read this novel ever since I saw the film (I got free tickets. Usually, I insist on reading the book first).

I do recommend the book: Kitty is an interesting character, and Maugham writes a convincing female protagonist - antagonist? - though she is perhaps imbued with slightly 'masculine' morals for the time! I could have blathered on for yards more about the book, particularly comparing it with TSP - I have to wonder if this could not have been an alternative ending, if Marguerite had never learned the truth about Percy? Though Percy isn't as repressed or judgemental as Walter, his conception of the woman he married was rocked by events, just as the Fane's marriage is. And Kitty takes Marguerite's streak of vanity and runs with it ( ... )
