One of my very favorite Dean moments in S1 is in Provenance, when he is sitting on the bed, and quietly telling Sam that he thinks Jess would want Sam to be happy...

This calls that to mind so vividly. Your Dean here is so aware of Sam's pain, but grief is something they've never really dealt with in their family. He's sort of in over his head, but somehow Dean always can figure out what his little brother needs, and is there for him.

Way to break my heart, there!

Thanks, Harrigan! And I'm so pleased that you mentioned the scene in Provenance as it's exactly the side of Dean that I was trying to tease out so that that the whole fic didn't turn out too chick-flicky and out of character.

And I think that especially in season one, Dean would do just about anything to help Sam out, even if it means instigating a touchy feely moment, because we all kinda loves those, right?!
