Awww. I think you really need to get a puppy, because you've been dreaming about it for a while, and it would make your cats' life SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING. (They might hate you for it, though). Do you have enough room in your apartment?
I don't, so I make do with my concierge's puppy, who is adorable and always plays with me when I come down. I kinda want to dognap him!
I think I need to get a puppy, too, but I'm not really sure if I could deal with my cats' misery. (Major K just opened the door to the doggie room and had a good hiss at Mr. Really Tiny Doggie before running away.)
There's plenty of room, but I really want to keep them separated because Mr. R is so small (and his bulging eyes creep me out in the WOW THOSE ARE PROBABLY EASY FOR A CAT CLAW TO BREAK way).
Does it have to be a puppy? Because my dog is older and very laid-back and doesn't care if the cat sleeps on him or licks his face. If you didn't get a hyperactive puppy, maybe your cats wouldn't be as fussed?
Yeah, I didn't actually mean a puppy-puppy (I don't think I have enough energy for that) but I'm fairly sure anything even vaguely canine would be too much for at least Minor. I mean, she still hasn't got over the fact that one of her kittens stayed here after weaning, and it's been more than five years. I don't think the other two would be very accepting, either, but I'm less sure of those.
Eeee! How fun! I confess I did everything wrong with introducing Kaiya to the cats, so Kizzy was totally blase about her but the boys are big ol' fraidy cats still. (Of course, they're afraid of everything and everyone, so...) But there are ways to get them acclimated so they don't freak out, even if they're never pals. Or you can keep them separate, as I mostly do, and everyone deals. So...yeah, I'm in the "You need to find a way to have a dog" camp.
I figure this will be a good chance for me to see how this would work out - if my cats, or even one of them, really, seem like they're acclimatizing even a little during this time and don't spend all their time skulking in the corners upstairs even though they have to know the door to The Evil Scary Thing is closed, well...
Having a dog and keeping it separate from the cats doesn't really feel like a long-term option to me, or at least a pretty sad one, since I really like having cats around in everything I do and would feel awful shutting them out. (Really, what I need is a timeshare in a dog, where I would get the walking and playing time and someone else would get the placid lying around doing nothing but.)
I do miss the cats being around at will, and if I ever get my house cleaned up, I have A Plan for forcing everyone to deal. But first I have to deal with the house. :-(
Hah! Yeah, I think that won't happen. Major opened the door here earlier, hissed, and ran away. Which is hilarious considering Mr. R just stood there looking very small and kind of stupid. I'm going to keep him downstairs anyway, just so the cats can feel free to move around everywhere else.
I already took a couple, but I keep forgetting that (some) dogs are actually interested in the whole camera thing and wont to stick their noses right up against the lens. Heh.

I was looking at my local animal shelter websites last night, despite the fact that we do not need any more dogs or cats at the moment. Gah!
