The hire car - just a couple of issues

When we were in England we had booked a hire car for the 4 of us to travel in. Due to the amount of suitcases etc my sister met us at the airport with my parents to assist getting everyone home.

babyghia's dad went with my parents and some of the luggage. The rest of us got the courtesy bus to the hire car compound. Myself and babyghia had decided to get a ( Read more... )

Good on ya--glad you're keeping Dad on his toes. ;)

The scariest experience I had driving an unfamiliar car was when I borrowed my friend Kelly's '62 Thunderbird--I was driving a 1980 Ford Fairmont at the time (yes, my dad being ex-CHP means he inflicted a series of gigantic ugly cars on me) & it never occurred to me that I had power steering & brakes on my car 'til I went to stop at a stop sign in the T-bird & instead sailed straight through the intersection! Luckily I was in Fortuna, if you know where that is (tiny town up in Humboldt County) so there wasn't any traffic, but sheesh, I about turned blue when that happened...& needless to say, I *stomped* on the T-bird's brakes with great force thereafter.

I don't like the sound of that module either. Are we going to end up being considered old fogeys just because we like keys?

Yeah, it was funny - perfect placement and timing.

I've heard about those sorts of brakes. I've driving with powered and not powered (as well as underpowered). The fuse controlling the powered brakes blew once when I was driving. Interesting trying to stop but thankfully I always carry spare fuses... I think the brakes in the T-bird are described as 'milk bottle tops'. Stopping distance is measured in miles ;-)

Probably, there is something 'nice' about turning the key. Probably something mechanically 'nice'. Probably soon will be as useful as a manual gearbox, a lost of people can't drive 'stick' so makes it harder to steal :-D. babyghia is looking to buy a car soon and the one she wants thankfully comes with a key (and a proper handbrake)
