I'm not sure how I inspire such random acts. Opening myself to the possiblitity of friendly conversing has apparently also opened the door to creeps who make sudden advancements in a misguided attempt at affection.

In situations like this, I just say, "Sorry, but I only friend people I'm close to on Facebook," and then smile politely and walk off.

It not only lets them know upfront that you won't be accepting, but also lets them know that you don't consider them a friend (or close enough to be a friend), and it gets it out of the way so there isn't that "will she/won't she" question in his head for the rest of time, and then the resentment on his end from you ignoring his request.
