The other day, I was musing on a song I'd heard once on Doctor Demento's show years ago. Advertised as a recording from 70,000BC by The Shaggs, the tune was My Pal Foot Foot. So I figured I'd see if this random bit of doggerel was available on the iTunes Music Store, which has quite a random collection, with many obvious things missing, but many ( Read more... )

At first, this seemed like an odd fandom, but then I read the references in the other comments, and learned a lot more about the bizarre history of the Shaggs. And I realized that there must have been some reason this song stuck in my head for so many years after hearing it on the air once.

"My Pal Foot-Foot" is one of the more legendary unknown songs. It gets name-checked in a Young Ones episode, and I think a Rolling Stone reviewer called it The Worst Song of All Time. They have an extensive wikipedia article.

Wow, that article (and the associated links) is a real eye-opener! I had no idea where these people came from or the history of that album. As ever, the good Doctor has a knack for finding wonderful things that are undeservedly obscure and getting them on the air.

Yeah, it's still fairly hit-or-miss. I'm always poking around trying to find various specific things, and am still often disappointed. Like the Kim Carnes cover version of "Looker", which shouldn't be too obscure, but it ain't there. I'm not surprised the original (by Sue Saad and the Next) isn't there, nor the garage band cover by someone with a name like Earthquake Dog (can't find the reference at the moment).
