The end of A.I -- The boy will dream for all eternity that he has a mother and is loved. He has sought love his entire life, never found any, pined for it, and eventually sunk to the bottom of the ocean until he shut down. He died. He was resurrected later and given an eternal "sleep" or dream. It is analogous to his dying and achieving heaven. If there isn't a mythical religious heaven, then all the humans who spurned him had long since died and were nothing, but he alone was now able to experience eternal bliss and peace because of his robotic nature and because the beings that found him reviewed his beautiful memories and decided to reward him, like God judging at the gate

Indeed.

You know, it's interesting, when I first watched A.I. I wanted the movie to be over after the first fadeout, and I kind of off-handedly dismissed what came next as just another Spielberg ending. I am, after all, a cynical bastard. However, reading your take on it, I realize I was being unfair and short-sighted, unable to see out of my little well of darkness. I now have an appreciation for it and actually want to re-watch it with that mindset. Thank you for that.

I will have to check out the Fountain and Johnny Got His Gun.
