Chapter 6

"That was such a great evening." Mirai said, smiling as both her and Ryosuke stepped out to the front porch.

"I'm delighted." Chinen replied, smiling as well. He held out his hand to shake.

Mirai didn't take it but instead move forward and gave him a friendly kiss on the cheek.

Chinen grinned even wider and bowed abashly.

Mirai then turned to Umika.

"Lovely to meet you." She said, smiling at her as well.

"And you." Umika said. "I'll wait till you've gone before I tell him you're a vegetarian."

Chinen's eyes widen. "No!"

Mirai chuckled.

"Night, night, Non-chan." Mirai said turning to Kanon this time.

"I'm so sorry about the loo thing. I meant to leave but I just... look, ring me if you need someone to go shopping with. I know lots of nice, cheap places... not that money necessarily..." Kanon trailed off and just gave up. "...nice to meet you."

She just said and then she moved forward and hugged her.

"You too... from now on you are my style guru." Mirai said, returning the hug.

Ryosuke and Mirai turned to leave, but then Keito piped.

"Love your work. " He said.

Kanon smirked.

"Keito, stop trying to save some dignity." she said teasingly, but not harshly.

Keito just pouted as the two wave goodbye.

The door closed and then...

"Was that really Shida Mirai?!?!"

"I can't believe I made a fool of myself!!!!"

"Oh my goodness, this is the best birthday ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Oh my God, I chatted with THE Shida Mirai!!!!!!"

"And she kissed me on the cheeks! She kissed me!!!!!"

"This is sooo embarrassing!!!!"

Ryosuke scratched his head, a little embarrased.

"Sorry... they are not used to... well..."

Mirai giggled and shook her head to say it's okay. They were really a unique bunch.

The house was on the borderline of Yamato-shi, just by the edge of Ayase-shi.

They walk silently for a moment, side by side.

"Floppy, huh?" Mirai suddenly said, sniggering. She was really in a good mood tonight.

"It's the hair! It's to do with the hair." Ryosuke said defensively.

Mirai just laughed.

They continued to walk in silence for a while.

And then, Mirai looked at Ryosuke again. Ryosuke smiled at her.

"Why is she in a wheelchair?" She asked, her face a little worried

Ryosuke's smile faded. "It was an accident... more than a year ago."

Mirai just nodded.

"And the pregnancy thing... is that to do with the accident?" she asked.

"You know, I'm not sure. I don't think they'd tried for kids before, as fate would have it." Ryosuke said.

They walk in silence for a moment. Both pondering...

And then,

"Would you like to come... my house is just...?" Ryosuke said.

Mirai smiled at him and shook her head.

"Too complicated." She said.

Ryosuke smiled understandingly. "That's fine."

"Busy tomorrow?" Mirai asked this time.

Ryosuke gave her a look, "I thought you were leaving?"

"I was." Mirai said, then she took his hand and pulled him silently inviting him for another stroll.

They walked silently, both appreciating the night scene of Ayase-shi.

They were by the Tokaido lines when Mirai spoke again.

"What's in there?" She asked, pointing at a gate.

"Gardens. All these streets round here have these mysterious communal gardens in the middle of them. They're like little villages." Ryosuke said.

"Let's go in." Mirai said.

"Ah no..." Ryosuke said, scratching his head. "that's the point... they're private villages... only the people who live round the edges are allowed in."

Mirai looked at him, silently challenging. "You abide by rules like that?"

"Ahm..."

She looked at him, waiting with interest on the answer to this.

"Heck no..." Ryosuke declared. "other people do... but not me... I just do what I want."

Then he marched towards the gate and rattled it. Then he started to climb.

But he doesn't quite make it, and  he fell back onto the pavement...

"Whoopsidaisies." Ryosuke said.

"What did you say?" Mirai said, there was definitely laughter in her tone.

"Nothing." Ryosuke said quickly.

"Yes, you did." Mirai said teasingly.

"No, I didn't." Ryosuke insisted.

"You said 'whoopsidaisies." Mirai said.

There was a tiny pause.

"I don't think so." Ryosuke continued, defensively. "No one has said 'whoopsidaisies,' do they... I mean unless they're..." He was cut off.

"There's no 'unless.' No one has said "whoopsidaisies" for fifty years and even then it was only little girls with blonde ringlets." Mirai said, now full-out laughing.

"Exactly." Ryosuke just said and then as if to change the subject, he faced the gates again. "Here we go again."

And he fail to climb yet again. And unfortunately, spontaneously...

"Whoopsidaisies."

They look at each other.

"It's a disease I've got..." Ryosuke said, giving up, but all the while enjoying their little squabble. "it's a clinical thing. I'm taking pills and having injections... it won't last long."

Mirai just smiled at him.

"Step aside." She said.

Ryosuke did and then she started climbing up.

"Actually, be careful Mirai... it's harder than it looks..." Ryosuke tried to say but she was already almost over.

"Oh no it's not... it's easy." Ryosuke said, watching Mirai in awe.

A few seconds later, Mirai jumped down into the garden.

"Come on, Flops." She said, smirking at Ryosuke.

Ryosuke clambered over with terrible difficulty, dusted himself off, and headed towards where she stood.

It was just your normal garden. Not really remarkable. No beautiful flowers either. Just plants and shubbery.

"Now seriously..." Ryosuke said, looking around. "...what in the world in this garden could make that ordeal worthwhile?"

And then, it happened so fast, Ryosuke wasn't sure if it did happen but Mirai leaned forward... and, for the firs time since the first time... she kissed him.

This time a proper kiss.

Mirai stepped back and smiled at Ryosuke. Ryosuke was dazed.

There was a tiny pause. Ryosuke just stared at Mirai as if registering what just happened.

"Uhm, nice garden." he just said.

They walked around the garden, now hand in hand.

It was a moonlit dream. Not a remarkable garden but the lights of the houses that surround the garden and the moonlight made the place seems magical.

They came across a single, simple wooden bench.

Mirai surveyed it. There was something written on it.

She read it outloud as Ryosuke watch her. "For Haru, who loved this garden --from Hikaru who always sat beside her."

There was an inscription carved into the wood.

Mirai read silently,  'Yaotome Haru, 1917 - 1992.'

Mirai's eyes widen.

"What is it?" Ryosuke asked beside her. He had also read the inscription.

"Some people do spend their whole lives together..." Mirai said silently.

Ryosuke just nodded.

Mirai looked at him, and he smiled.

"It's amazing, ne?" He said.
