Chapter 5

Previously:

There was a pause, and then Kanon burst out, "Oh God this is one of those key moments in life, when it's possible you can be really, genuinely cool and I'm going to fail a hundred percent. I absolutely and totally and utterly adore you and I think you're the most beautiful woman in the world and more importantly I genuinely believe and have believed for some time now that we can be best friends. What do you think?"

Mirai was a bit surprised at the girl but laughed at her antics, "Ahm... I think that sounds... you know... lucky me. Happy Birthday." She said, not really knowing what else to say.

She handed her a present.

"Oh my God. You gave me a present. We're best friends already. Marry Nii... he's a really nice guy and then we can be sisters!" Kanon said energetically.

"I'll think about it." Mirai said, smiling.

---

It was an awkward moment for Ryosuke. Her little sister just proposed for him.

But the air was gone when the doorbell rang.

"That'll be Keito, or Yuto-tachi." Chii said and then he headed out into the corridor to the front door.

Chinen opened the door and surely, it was Keito.

"Hello, Keito." Chinen said.

"I'm sorry I'm so late." He said at once.

"You aren't the last to come." Chinen said.

"Well, that's the case. Yuto and Suzu-chan can't come. Yuka-chan was burning in fever. She's okay-" Keito said at once at the expression on Yuka's godfather's face. "Yuto said she played in the rain. But she'll be okay. It's natural for kids to get sick..."

Chinen let out a sigh. "I'll call them."

He said and left Keito by the door.

"Uhmm.. I'm letting myself in, okay?"

---

Keito entered the living room and at once was greeted by Umika.

"Keito! You came."

Keito smiled at her. "Hey, Umi-chan."

"Oh, by the way, Keito, this is Mirai." Umika introduced. It was only Umika and Mirai in the room. Chinen had told Ryosuke about Yuka and they both rushed to the phone.

Keito smiled at Mirai.

"Hello, Mirai. Delighted to meet you." He said. He didn't recognize her.

He turned to Kanon.

"Hey, Kanyon, happy birthday to you." He said as he hands her a present. "It's a hat. You don't have to wear it or anything."

Ryosuke and Chii came back then.

"Oh, Hey, Keito." Ryosuke greeted.

"Ryo-chan!"

Since they weren't waiting for anyone else, they moved to the kitchen for their late dinner.

Ryosuke volunteered to help Chii serve the food so Mirai just sat by the table. After a while, Keito sat next to him and made small talks.

"So tell me Mirai, what do you do?"

"I'm an actress."

"Splendid. I'm actually in the stock-market, so not really similar fields, though I have done some amateur stuff... P.G. Wodehouse, you know... farce, all that." Keito said as Mirai listened. "Always imagined it's a pretty tough job, though, acting. I mean the wages are a scandal, aren't they?"

Mirai nodded. "Well, they can be."

"I see friends from university... clever chaps... been in the business longer than you... they're scraping by on seven, eight thousand a year. It's no life. What sort of acting do you do?" Keito said a bit distracted as Chii serve them drinks.

"Films mainly." Mirai answered.

"Oh splendid. Well done. How's the pay in movies? I mean, last film you did, what did you get paid?" Keito said, interestedly.

"Fifteen million yen." Mirai said casually.

"Right. Right. So that's... fairly good. On the high side... have you tried--"

"Umm, Keito-san, I'm sorry can you excuse me?" Mirai asked politely.

Keito smiled and nodded. Mirai turned to Umika.

"I wonder if you could tell me where the...?" Mirai asked, implying.

"Oh, it's just down the corridor on the right." Umika said graciously.

"I'll show you." Kanon offered.

There was a moment of silence as the two leave.

And then in a split second the others all turn to Ryosuke.

"Quickly, quickly- talk very quickly what are you doing here with Shida Mirai?" Umika said very fast.

"Shida Mirai?" Keito asked.

"Yes." Umika said but she didn't look away from Ryosuke.

"Shida Mirai??" Keito asked again, realization dawning on him.

"Yes." Umika said.

"The movie star?" Keito asked, aghast.

"Yup." Umika said, nodding her head.

"Oh God. Oh God. Oh Goddy God." Keito said, looking down. "What have I been saying?!"

But then the door opened again and in came Kanon.

"I don't believe it." She said and she truly looked shocked. "I walked into the loo with her. I was still talking when she started unbuttoning her jeans... She had to ask me to leave."

She said and then she covered her face with her hand.

---

They started eating right when Mirai came back. Mirai stayed fairly quiet just listening to them talk and answering some of their questions.

Umika, who was sitting close, turned to Mirai.

"What do you think of the guinea fowl?" She asked with a smile.

But then Mirai gestured for her to come closer and when she did, Mirai whispered, "I'm a vegetarian."

"Oh. Oh God." Umika exclaimed.

Mirai giggled. This seems to help Umika relax.

Mirai smiled at her, she returned the smile.

"Don't tell Yuri."

Mirai gave out another chuckle and nodded.

Mirai smiled as she looked around the people around her. Everyone was very relaxed as they eat dinner.

It seemed new to her... but at the same time she was feeling a bit nostalgic. As if she had known this warmth before.

Real friends... relaxed... easy, teasing. There was even a strawberry cake, favorite of the Yamada siblings it seems. On her right, Umika was adding vegetables to Chinen's plate, in front of her, there was Kanon, cheery and energetic, and she was wearing Keito's unsuitable hat. Beside her, Ryosuke was laughing at something and then putting his head in his hands with mock shame.

What would she give to have this as well.

She was brought out from her trance when Chinen spoke directly to her while also addressing the others.

"Having you here, Mirai, firmly establishes what I've long suspected, that we really are the most desperate hot of under-achievers." He announced.

"Shame!" Keito said, a bit laughing.

"I'm not saying it's a bad thing, in fact, I think it's something we should take pride in." Chinen said. "I'm going to give the last brownie as a prize to the saddest act here."

There was a little pause. Then Ryosuke turned to Keito.

"Keito." He said.

"Well, obviously it's me, isn't it... I work in the city in a job I don't understand and everyone keeps getting promoted above me. I haven't had a girlfriends since... puberty and, well, the long and short of it is, nobody fancies me, and no one ever will." Keito said.

"Nonsense." Kanon said, shaking her head. "I fancy you."

Keito looked up at her, "Really?"

Another pause and then Kanon said, "Okay... I just lied."

And Keito returned to looking at the floor.

"I don't really agree." Chinen said. "Unless I'm much mistaken, your job still pays you rather a lot of money, while Kanon here, she earns nothing flogging her guts out at Japan's seediest record store." Chinen said, turning to Kanon now.

"Yes. And I used to have beautiful hair. But my stupid boss required all their employees to have short hair, and I've got funny goggly eyes, and I'm attracted to cruel men and... no one'll ever marry me because my boobsies have actually started shrinking." Kanon said.

"You see?" Chinen said, shaking his head in mock pity. "Incredibly sad."

"On the other hand," Umika chirped. "her best friend is Shida Mirai."

Kanon smiled cheekily, "That's true, I can't deny it. She needs me, what can I say?"

Mirai smiled at the young woman.

"And most of her limbs work." Umika continued. "Whereas I'm stuck in this thing," she indicated her wheelchair "day and night, in a house full of ramps. And so now, I've totally given up dancing, my favourite thing, and the truth is... we can't have a baby."

Dead silence.

Everyone save for Chii was looking at Umika.

"Umika..." Ryosuke called.

But before he could say anything, Umika shrugged her shoulder.

Keito stared, totally grief-struck.

"No. Not true..."

Umika smiled at Keito. "That's life... We're lucky in lots of ways, but... Surely it's worth a brownie."

Ryosuke reached for her hand.

But then Chinen suddenly speak, smiling, though it didn't reach his eyes.

"Well, I don't know. Look at Ryosuke. Very unsuccessful professionally. Dumped. Used to be handsome, now kind of squidgy around the edges... and absolutely certain never to hear from Mirai again after she's heard that his nickname at school was Floppy." Chinen said, breaking the sombre mood.

Everyone laughed. Mirai smiled across at Ryosuke.

"So I get the brownie?" Ryosuke asked.

"I think you do, yes." Chinen said.

"Wait a minute. What about me?" Mirai piped.

"I'm sorry?" Chinen said, looking at Mirai. "You think you deserve the brownie?"

"Well... a shot at it." Mirai said.

"You'll have to prove it." Ryosuke said, smirking. "This is a great brownie and I'm going to fight for it. State your claim."

"Well," Mirai started. "I've been on a diet since I was nineteen, which means basically I've been hungry for half a decade. I've had a sequence of not nice boyfriends... one of whom hit me. And every time my heart gets broken it gets splashed across the newspapers as entertainment."

Mirai wasn't looking at anyone.

"And one day, not long from now..." Mirai continued.

While she was saying this, quiet settles around the table. The thing is... she sort of meant it and is opening up to them. They realize this, as well.

"...my looks will go, they'll find out I can't act and I'll become a sad middle-aged woman who looks a bit like someone who was famous for a while."

It was quiet while everyone took that in.

But then again, it was Chinen to break the ice.

"Nah!!! Nice try, gorgeous... but you don't fool anyone."

The mood was instantly broken and they all laughed.

"Pathetic effort to hog the brownie." Ryosuke said, taking the brownie in his hand.

Mirai laughed.

She'd definitely give anything for this.
