Chapter 11

Ryosuke placed his calculator back on his desk and sighed. He was never good in math and he couldn't figure out why he keeps on getting 'Math Error.'

He looked at his calendar. It was the last week of March 2018. Spring time again...

It had been 11 months, 2 weeks, 3 days and 2 boyfriends of Kanon, and who knows how many apologies of Ryuu since he first met her. And 11 months, 2 weeks, 1 day since she went to America.

He sighed yet again.

It was a grey day in the bookshop.

Yuto was in the second floor, arranging some books. While Ryosuke, as mentioned, was trying to calculate their sales.

Things in there never really change.

Ten seconds pass. And a burst of pink rushed in.

It was Kanon, and following her was Ryuu who was looking downcast as he had been the whole year. He had been blaming himself for what happened.

Ryuu only lingered by the doorway while Kanon marched up to him.

"Have we got something for you. Something which will make you love me so much you'll want to hug me every single day for the rest of my life!" Kanon said, smiling brightly at him.

Ryosuke blinked. "Really. What's that?"

"The phone number of Shida Mirai's agent in Tokyo and her agent in New York. You can call her! You think about her all the time, now you can call her!" Kanon said.

"Well, thanks, that's great." Ryosuke said, not really feeling very happy. He was confused at what he's supposed to do.

"It is great, isn't it!" Kanon exclaimed, hugging her brother.

She kissed him on his cheeks. "We'll be going now. See you tonight." she said.

And then she turned to Yuto. "Yuto-nii! Later, ne!"

Yuto waved at her from the stairs.

And then she rushed out, dragging Ryuu with her.

Ryosuke looked at the piece of paper for a moment.

Then, he folded it and then placed it gently in the garbage bin.

"I have a little speech to make," Umika said to the table at large. "I won't stand up because I can't... be bothered. Exactly a year ago today, this man here started the finest restaurant in Japan."

It was now early evening and the friends were gathered at the restaurant as usual.

"Thank you very much." Inoo said smiling.

"Unfortunately... no one ever came to eat here." Umika continued.

But Inoo was still smiling, albeit sadly.

"And so we must face the fact that from next week, we have to find somewhere near to eat." Umika said, sighing.

Inoo still smiled and then to everyone he said, "Sorry guys..."

"I just want to say to Inoo-chan," Chinen said. "...don't take it personally. The more I think about things, the more I see no rhyme or reason in life... no one knows why some things work out, and some things don't. Why some of us get lucky and some of us..."

"... get fired."

The group looked at Keito.

"No!" Suzuka said, frowning.

"Yes, they're shifting the whole outfit much more towards the trading side... and of course..." Keito sighed. "I was total crap."

There was a moment of silent. They were all stunned.

"So we go down together!" Inoo said in a supposed-to-be-cheerful voice. "A toast to Keito, the worst stockbroker in the whole world!" He said.

They toast him.

"Since it's an evening of announcements..." Kanon started, standing up. "I've also got one, Ahm... I've decided to get engaged."

And again, the group stared at Kanon as one. Total bewilderment was seen from their faces. Ryosuke was particularly gaping at her.

"I've found myself a nice, slightly odd looking guy who I know is going to make me happy for the rest of my life." She said, blushing a bit.

"Wait a minute!" Ryosuke said. "I'm your brother and I don't know anything about this."

"Is it someone we know?" Yuto asked, he had grew up with Ryosuke and Kanon. Kanon was as good as a sister.

"Yes." Kanon said. "I will keep you informed." She smiled at her two brothers, both of which looked as if having panic attacks.

As Kanon sat, she leaned towards Ryuu and whispered.

"By the way, it's you."

Ryuu blinked. "Me?"

"Yes." Kanon looked away, blushing. "What do you think?"

He blushed.

"Uhm, well, yes, it's a great idea."

There was a pause, and then Ryuu leaned towards Kanon.

"Wait, your brother won't kill me, would he?"

"Any more announcements?" Chinen asked at large.

"Yes," Ryosuke said, looking at everyone.

He sighed. "I feel I must apologize to everyone for my behavior for the last months. I have, as you know, been slightly down in the mouth."

"There's an understatement. There are dead people on better form." Yuto said, chuckling.

Ryosuke glared jokingly at him but then went on. "But I wish to make it clear I've turned a corner and henceforward intend to be impressively happy."

There was a round of applause. It was more to tease Ryosuke than anything.

-

Two hours later and everyone seems to have had a very good time.

There's been a chocolate cake. Lots of alcohol.

Inoo is playing 'Blue Moon' on the piano, and Keito, dragging Ryuu with him, joins in, singing.

At one table, Suzuka, Umika and Kanon sat, beer and wine on the table.

Elsewhere, Yuto, Chii and Ryosuke are relaxed together.

"So... you've laid the ghost." Chinen said.

"I believe I have." Ryosuke said, smiling.

"So you've totally moved on?" Yuto asked.

"I think I do." Ryosuke said.

"Which means you won't be distracted by the fact that she's back in Japan, grasping her Blue Ribbon, and to be found filming most days here in Kanagawa Prefecture." Chinen said, observing Ryosuke.

He placed a copy of the 'Tokyohive' with a picture of Mirai on its cover.

Ryosuke's eyes widen. "Oh God no..."

"So not over her, in fact." Yuto said.
