It says a lot of the things I couldn't quite articulate about why the romantic plotline, in particular, was disturbing.  I kept coming up with the word coercion, and it was hard to put into words why it felt that way, but the poster above does an excellent job of it.

Hm, I talked to a co-worker who really liked the books and her perspective of the romance was that it was written to be that way. That the movie makes it out to be something altogether different, but that in the books, it is all part of the dystopia, that she must make certain choices, even as regards her sexuality. And that the reader is meant to be disturbed by it.

If feels to me like how I felt about Little Women. I started to read the book when I was 12-ish. My best friend at the time loved the story and showed me the movie. When I saw how the story ended I refused to finish reading. Then I took a Lit. class in college and told my prof. that I resented having to read a book that I had pointed refused to finish. She was absolutely delighted and said that my reaction was the one she felt Alcott was wanting to inspire, that the book was written on two levels: one that her father would see and approve of from her and that would sell well and provide for her family and the other as a ( ... )

I may need the luck! LOL I'm all nostalgic over their Ewok enthusiasm, so it's worth a try.

I think that's probably a very fair evaluation of it; I felt the author was very successful in being disturbing! LOL

I sent the books on, and they are now two relatives away with no-one wanting to keep them after reading...but they certainly result in people having Opinions.
