I think you have to look at the nurture side of things too. Brought up by his aunt and uncle in a dustbowl on a planet that is famous for scum and villiany, thinking that his dad is this great hero who died trying to destroy the evil in the universe, then one day he buys this years newest models of robot from some short guys. One of the robots goes a bit doo-dally and wanders off, Luke goes out to get them and does and then finds out that they have a message for his tramp friend who lives in a stone hut. Then his aunt and uncle get slaughtered by the Empire and from then on, the life he has known up to them turns out to be complete bullshit and has the weight of saving the galaxy thrust upon his shoulders. I think I would forgive the farm-boy for making some bad choices along the way!
