Calories in, calories out

With less than two weeks to go now until the reality of my rather questionable decision to take part in the London to Brighton Bike Ride finally arrives and kicks me in the head, my preparations continued yesterday with a two-hour, 26-mile,1,478 hunk-of-calorie-burning-love training ride to Maidenhead and back in 70 degree heat ( Read more... )

So on that measure, I ran for about two hours yesterday, does that mean I have burned up 1,478 calories?
And how did you get that figure anyway?

I used this handy calorie calculator thingy ‘ere loike : http://www.healthstatus.com/cbc.html

I would give you a rough figure now but the calculator requires your weight - obviously I’m far too polite to ask.

I don’t know what type of bicycle that guestimate is given for, but the effort required to pedal a mountain bike around the roads is far greater than that required to pedal a racing bike.

(I was also overtaken several times by very old people on racing bikes.)

1542 calories running apparently. Not sure about that, I think it’s overstating it a bit. I thought I’d be a bit more efficient at energy usage than that!

Doesn't make any difference how fit you are, the calories you burn are dependant on your body weight/composition, height and the activity you are participating in.

It's difficult to know, but it compares pretty accurately with assessments done at my gym, so I think - well certainly for cycling - that it’s reasonably accurate.

One thing’s for sure - I’m absolutely ravenous today!

Ah! You may be onto something there. If it’s assuming I run on a treadmill, they are much mistaken. There is a world of difference between that and running outside.

And I’m hungee too.

Yes indeed; it’s far easier sitting on the stationary bike for an hour in the gym than it is heaving a mountain bike up and down the A4 while articulated lorries hurtle past and slam you into the gutter.

The terror factor alone burns 15% more calories than in the gym. :-)
