The Ted piece was disturbing but I'd rather be disturbed than see doctored photographs.

I actually did something similar to the doctoring described in the NY Times article here:

There were a couple of people in that picture who didn't want to be photographed for a number of reasons, but I really liked the picture. Further, the picture is actually two pictures cobbled together to give a wider view. I didn't like taking them out but I respected their wish to 'not be there.'

I never added someone who wasn't there, though. I have big problems with fooling myself and others that way.
