To keep other areas weed free (without the landscape fabric) there's a great product on the market called "Preen" and several other similar organic products based on corn meal residue (see GardensAlive! "W.O.W.") They prevent seeds from creating feeder roots, so the weeds can't get started. You can't use them in a place where you're using seeds to start plants, but once the plantings have been established, they keep down the need for either weeding or extreme poisons like round up. I used W.O.W. successfully on my lawns for years in MD
