Darkness willingly gave place to the pale and gentle moonlight glow bathing the two figures seated by the window. Not even the restless noise so typical of great urban centers dared to invade that space, but the night’s silence was softly broken by a woman’s soothing voice, causing the tiny bundle cradled with infinite care in her arms to ‘join’ the conversation every now and then.
“… the perfect birthday present: a toaster… a very complete one, by the way”.
Seemingly incomprehensible gurgles met the woman’s last statement and she looked down at the baby in sympathy “I know, sweetie… that’s what I thought at the time too”. Caressing the chubby hand tidily wrapped around her index finger, she continued the tale “but you see… like people say it’s not the gift that counts, it’s the sentiment behind it”.
Walking around the room in a slow pace the woman added, never abandoning the same comforting, warm tone “and besides, all you really need at your birthday - or at any other day of your life little one - is to be with those you love”. A brief pause, but long enough to leave a loving kiss on the baby’s hand and the proud mother was ready to continue “that was just about your mom’s answer back then to every one of the twenty or so times I asked what she wanted for a present”.
Gently rocking from side to side the little boy in her arms, Esther kept saying “and I agree with her completely… she’s absolutely right: nothing is more precious than the ones close to your heart…”. Lifting an eyebrow, the nurse concluded with a teasing smile on her lips “too bad I didn’t have a camera with me that day though, because your mommy’s expression whenever she mentioned how much she loved the toaster was priceless”.
In a very serene way, she spoke “of course that was not the real birthday gift… the official gift was a ring…” another gurgle, this one more like a giggle, came from her son “yes, sir… the very same ring you love to play with when you’re in mommy’s arms…”.
Without warning, the arms in question gently circled Esther’s waist from behind as Maca’s softly spoken words filled the room’s peaceful atmosphere, sending shivers down her favorite nurse’ spine “… and the very same ring I’ll carry with me until the last of my days”.
