First off, congrats on the job! Regardless of how related it is to what you want and how thrillingly exciting it isn't going to be-a job's a job these days, and now you've got one! Congrats again!
Now, on the subject of fanfic: I hear you. Opinions like that suck. Yes, people who write fanfic could be making money writing "original" stuff and yes, some of them are talented enough to do so, but what if they want to stay a hobby? What if they have a much easier time writing with someone else's characters? What if they know how hard it is to get published, or like the gratification of getting comments immediately? Hmm? Hmm? ^^ And so what if they're not making money, really? At least they're literate and writing (even if it's Suefic).
