Backwards and diminishing

I swear that my reading skills are weakening. It's like I'm Superman and my water has been dosed with small percentages of Kryptonite, and over time my powers are lessening. Still I will no longer be a bookworm who devours a book a day (roughly speaking), but instead a dull-witted jock. Not that I'm saying that all jocks are dull-witted, just that ( Read more... )

I will narrow your problem down to two possibilities, of which you must choose one:

1) You're overtired
2) You need glasses.

#1 may be true if you are also finding it harder to construct witty sentences - if you find words on the tip of your tongue more often, or are more forgetful, or just not as quick with words in general.
If you're sharp and "on the ball" as ever, then it is unusual that reading would be slower, and therefore may be due to... #2, eye strain. Getting your eyes tested is free if you have a medicare card.

Haha... sorry for being all diagnostic on you. It's probably just nothing anyway. I go through phases where I temporarily lose abilities for no apparent reason.

Maybe it's actually my eyes... That's an interesting thought. Like, right now I'm on the computer and the living room light isn't on (because the effing lights are BROKEN) and even though the kitchen light is on, I am finding it a strain on my eyes to be reading in the dark. So I shall get off soon. But that is just an issue of darkness. My eyes don't usually actually hurt when I read, even when it's late at night and I've just got my bedside lamp on. And I always stop reading when I realise I'm too tired to take in any information and I can't keep my eyes open without effort. Even in the middle of the day when I'm awake, I find myself rereading things. Maybe it's an issue of some weird absentmindedness I am getting as I age - that is, I'm not actually paying attention the first time I read things. But I am! But also apparently not enough. Soooo I don't know what the problem is, but it really could be my eyes, which is troublesome. I haven't had them checked since I was 13, so perhaps I should. I am glad you say it is free on Medicare ( ... )

Hmm... Well I've also started noticing my eyes hurting a little bit and a slight tension headache in my temples when reading, so either I am imagining it because of all this talk about perhaps needing glasses and eye problems or I really do have one. Anyway, I made an appointment for next week with an optometrist, so hopefully that will be okay. The one I'm going to Mum said was supposed to be very good, so hopefully they won't rip me off. I'll probably tell them a couple of my concerns whilst they are doing the test, but I won't make any hasty decisions about buying glasses. If I feel like I'm getting cheated, I'll just get a second opinion.
