Cyclone Gabrielle

Feb 16, 2023 23:25

Gabrielle was a damp squib in my area, and would that other parts of the country had been so lucky.

Elaine is stuck in her home, safe enough, but with no power for coming on to three full days. And this article contains distressing and downright weird pictures because nature does strange things sometimes pacific's triple star

My area got off relatively lightly and certainly the towns were okay. We also had a good jolt of an earthquake to round off the misery, but at least that was only scary not damaging.

We do get the odd earthquake here but they're barely noticeable - and where I live is mostly protected from the worst of the weather by the hills to the south (thank goodness). But we've had a lot of rain recently.

Yeah, we're good. But that six foot deep silt in some places - imagine the power of water to carry that. It is indeed terrifying.

We're safe, just inconvenienced in my immediate area. But the Hawkes Bay has been devastated, and it's almost literally the country's fruit bowl too, so there are implications for the wider economy as well as the poor beggars at the front lines of the disaster.

Me and mine are safe, but I know the damaged area reasonably well, and my distress at seeing what's happened will be nothing compared to the people who are actually there.

Apparently there was a similar effect in a flood in 1938 - river valleys and silt are a thing, i guess.

It's good to be safe, but kind of sobering to see others in such a terrible situation.
