I made copious use of quotes from Becky's transcripts here. Such an excellent resource. And these comments tend towards noticing the slashy. Just because...
This episode has some of my favourite bits ever, that you did justice to here; Incacha's death, the shouting match, the conversation in the car... that last one was just :;flaily hands:; they're both so busy asking for reassurance that they're loved and wanted that they don't notice it's being asked OF them, too...
This the ep that launched a thousand slash stories, for sure. And I'm so in agreement with your assessment of the emotional underpinnings of the truck scene. Bloody men...;-)
I have to admit that if I were asked to choose the episode with the lamest plot, this is the one I'd choose. Not for the spiritual things or for Incacha passing on the way of the shaman to Blair; those are necessary for the character development. But come on, a bunch of half-naked men are climbing up and down buildings and nobody notices them? I'd certainly notice a bunch of half-naked men.
You and me both. I was bitching to EE about this yonks ago, when I wrote 'Debrief'. Although I'm sure that there must be lamer plots in our beloved canon, but some episodes are just more fun to look at really closely. :-)
Oh, wonderful! One of my two or three most favorite episodes ever, and you did it great justice. All those lovely slashy bits...the conversation in the truck just kills me every time I hear it; it's just such a wonderful example of denial and avoidance - the verbal expression of, as you point out, the dancing around each other they've been doing nonverbally all episode.
And I'm just sure that when Blair makes that hand-clasping gesture in talking to Incacha ("he learns from me, I learn from him") that the reason that both Jim and Incacha are grinning is because, unbeknownst to him, Blair has just used the Chopec sign for lovers.
This is about as slashy as it gets in mainstream tv. Even if the plot really does not stand up to dissection... (Well, Starsky and Hutch is slashier, but I love these boys more.)
