Her story reminds me a lot of what it was like when we were dating in college. This only redoubles my desire to kick some social ass.

Pardon my denseness, but are you saying you had some social pressures working against you? If so, what sort and from what source?

I come from an Orthodox Jewish family & community. For the first three years of our relationship, I wouldn't hold his hand on the street without checking my Jew-dar - just for example. I was terrified that someone would find out we were dating and that I'd be ostracized as a result. I could, of course, "pass" in safe spaces where I was sure no one I knew would ever go - but I recognize so much of what she describes and how awful it feels.
