The funny thing is, whenever anyone overseas hints to the mere possibility of what you said above, someone always bursts into a shriek of "It's not true! You just hate America!!1 Die, terrorist, die!"

*sigh*

If we hated America (how do you hate a whole country, anyway?), why do they think we would *care* what kind of information its citizens get?

When I was in Japan in the aftermath of 9/11 (September 2001-July 2002), I found that news I would pass on to my relatives back home took on average a week to trickle down through the American media if at all. Things like troop movements in Afghanistan, battleship arrivals and departures at Japanese bases, and policy implementation would be reported as recent events in the States, and when my parents would mention them to me in email or phone chats, and I would have to tell them that the thing had actually gone down 7-10 days prior.
