Title: Plain Sight
Author: ma_raven
Words: 625
Spoilers: Pilot, Promos to Date
Rating: PG-13
Character/Pairings:Kurt/Puck
Author's Notes: Still getting my footing in the Glee!verse, but thanks to everyone who's given me such a warm welcome thusfar! Also, for the record, this was complete before the airing of tonight's episode ("Showmance" 01x01?). I just didn't get home/access to the interweb until afterward.

Summary: It wasn't supposed to happen like this. Or, well, it wasn't supposed to happen at all, but that particular ship had already sailed (and vanished over the horizon, and possibly established a colony that would one day take its place as a global superpower).

It wasn't supposed to happen like this. Or, well, it wasn't supposed to happen at all, but that particular ship had already sailed (and vanished over the horizon, and possibly established a colony that would one day take its place as a global superpower).

On some level, Puck knew that not everyone's life was like a soap opera. That there were normal, apple-pie childhoods amongst the student body of WMHS. It just didn't seem to be anyone he really knew.

Quinn, for example, was a cheerleading star in grade 10 and had earned it every step of the way. But it hadn't come cheap, and he still remembered the summer she'd turned twelve when her mother had put her on a diet because she'd gotten her period and was "old enough to be taking care of business" already.

Artie's life had been normal, once upon a time. But then, Finn had a father once upon a time, and look how that turned out. Although when push came to shove, Finn was probably the closest thing to normal that Puck hung out with regularly. Because all of them were fucked up, in their own ways. The only difference was that people overlooked it if you were one of the right sort. Or, more accurately, they didn't care about you if you didn't belong to their clique, and if you did, well, they pretended not to see things out of pity. Either way, the result was the same, and they all squeaked by hiding in plain sight.

The key to hiding, however, was keeping your head down when you could. Getting drunk and dragging the newly minted football star (who just happened to be gay as a fucking flower, closet or no closet) into the spare bedroom at a post-game party was not keeping his head down. But, well, Kurt was a strange kind of pretty, especially after a snake bite had his eyes shining and his cheeks flushed. And Puck wasn't good with temptation, never had been, even if he'd gotten damn good at reading his chances and keeping out of the firing line if the odds weren't in his favor.

So he took that chance, and he took it on his terms. Thought it might almost have been worth it, too, when Kurt looked up at him with those pretty eyes and sighed quietly as they fluttered closed in pleasure. But Puck's life is a soap opera, and he hasn't made it this far by flaunting the rules - he's not Finn, couldn't get away with it even if he wanted to. So he presses up against Kurt, takes his own pleasure and wrings a promise of silence in return, because Kurt knew the rules before Puck ever had to say a thing.

Rules existed for a reason, after all, and there was only so far any of them could go when it came to breaking the mold.
