Author's Notes: First of a few Glee fics I'm just wrapping off today/tomorrow before the re-airing of the pilot. First fic posted now that I've returned to life on the interweb. Just a brief character study in the usefulness of stereotypes.
Summary: There are certain laws to the universe.
There are certain laws to the universe. Who mixes, who doesn't. Who gets the good grades, who's good at sports, and whether the two can ever be combined. Who might be found in the wrong kind of bar in ten years and who's beyond reproach just by virtue of who they are.
Football players panting after the cheer squad fall into the last category. Just like boys who are foolish enough to name designers at the drop of a hat belong to the former. Oil and water, even after Finn joined the Glee club and started "mixing". Even after one of the kids from Glee tried out for football. You are what you are first, and the extraneous stuff is just camouflage.
This is why, when Puck drags Kurt off the field following practice, heading toward the storage shed on the wrong side of the bleachers, no one notices and no one suspects. He catches Finn giving him a hairy eyeball, sometimes, but as long as the kid doesn't complain and isn't sporting new eyeshadow, Finn seems willing to watch at a distance. Puck knows that two years is a long time to play pretend, but he doesn't worry about it. He knows the world he lives in, knows its ins and outs.
That's why he knows that it won't last, because nothing this good can.
