You know what?

I still don't feel well.

In other news, I was thinking about the Nicholas Cage movie Next recently. Why, you may ask? Is it because I like to torture myself by watching crap?

Well, kind of. It's because Rifftrax has a commentary track for that movie and I watched it a while back. It was one of the better tracks they've had available, mostly ( Read more... )

Theraflu cures all!

Thank you for continuing to amuse me with both your fic and your diatribes against the general stupidity of the human race. I especially enjoyed your well researched destruction of nemo_gravis re: cell-phone-cancer. Please continue to destroy ridiculously superstitious attitudes everywhere.

So make it 5 minutes instead of two minutes, Xander (or otherwise fun character) instead of Nicholas Cage (who for some reason is right up there with John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson in terms of how sexy women view them), and make it a teenage super Bond-like action adventure sex spoof rather than the "Diary of a Psychic" that /Next/ was.

Also, story aside (which wasn't as bad as the Chevy Chase "Vacation" movies) the movie could've been carried through on it's special effects and the fact that the acting in it did NOT suck. (It's not the actors fault that Hollywood makes the writers do nothing but corny and cheesy action flicks if it's anything BUT a drama!)

Anyway, if you do happen to write such a fanfic, I look forward to reading it.

AFTER you finish "Infinite Crisis"!!

If it’s fanfic you’re talking about, not a problem. Just say straight-out: “The Nic Cage movie Next was a waste of celluloid and lifespan, but the two-minute-peek-into-the-future was a very promising gimmick. I’m taking it over, since it was so appallingly wasted, and this is MY use of it.”

1) I didn't think Next was that bad. I saw it last night on DVD. While doing other stuff.

1a) I agree there's much more potential with the idea than they used.

2) You either come into a project with a story or an idea. I think that Ridley Scott came into Blade Runner happy (more or less) with the story, but for most of the rest (Next, Minority Report, Screamers, Total Recall), it's very clear that the movie got greenlit only because of the star, and that the idea is the thing, not the story. So, they wrap the story around the name actor's whims and keep the idea. Which, of course, sucks.

I have not seen this movie, but I've seen the effect you are talking about. It's like the more they have to spent on actors and special effects, the less they invest in writers, because they think they do not need to depend on the story to satisfy the audience (which unfortunately is often true). - Noticable in buffy after the move to UPN too - hopefully this might chance after the writers strike?

Although while it is sad with films, it's easily to skip, which i find it harder with TV series. Like how they butchered Andromeda one and a half year into the series by abandoning the main concepts in fovor of the lead actor and the special effects.

On the other hand, the stargate-universe has the frustrating habit of shying away of any opportunity to become a little bit deeper, just to keep as close as posssible yto it's formula.
