Oh, I like this. I like it because it's Alex without the psycho! killer! angst! but it's still perfectly in character, because it's a younger Alex with every other aspect, the ambition and the need to be best, shown benignly. And that's new.

Yeah, I'm sort of tired of psycho angsty Alex, so I'm glad it was clear that this is younger, sweeter Alex.

Excellent! It shows, with admirable economy, both why Alex has friends to begin with and how he ends up the way he does.
