For some reason I didn't expect it to be quite that nasty. Can't recall why not. Maybe we've been spoiled, being out of the spotlight for a few months.

Too much to hope that the general public will ignore it too?

That's because you're the best of us when it comes to believing the best in people, June. I only wish I could say I'd had the same expectations.

It is most likely a futile hope to think the general public will ignore it. but, perhaps we can hope for the usual state of apathy when it comes to making changes -- at least as far as it goes toward acting upon Goodfeather's suggestion.

Because you still possess a shocking degree of Gryffindor nobility and a determination to find justice in the world, despite all evidence to the contrary.

Never mind, Remus. There had to be a starting point somewhere.

I'll be having Bingley keep a closer eye on their appeal. I would not put it past some of our 'tolerant' populace to consider some means of sabotage. I trust he gave you no difficulty in filing the appeal to begin with?

I don't know about nobility, but if I've learned nothing else in my lifetime, it's that people are never just what they seem and they will always pleasantly surprise you if you just have a little faith in them.

My only wish is that this 'starting point' didn't mean putting the most vulnerable of my pack into harm's way. To do what's best for them, I have to hurt them for no fault of their own...just to give them the freedoms others their age so recklessly take for granted.

Bingley was most accommodating, actually. He and Dean -- you remember Dean Thomas? Seamus Finnegan's mate in school? -- have been very helpful and supportive. After just a couple meetings, I feel confident enough believing he was most likely a Slytherin and one after your own heart.

At least the hearing date is set now. Three months and we'll know for sure if it's worth it to keep hoping...

Don't be ridiculous. He was a Ravenclaw - I checked. Though, admittedly, he does have some characteristics I find highly admirable. I would never have entrusted our legal needs to a Slytherin remotely close to our generation. Might as well ask Lucius to be our barrister and Bellatrix the court.

Rollins and Brocklehurst know your intentions, and do not blame you for society's prejudice. You are being simultaneously too hard on yourself and too soft-hearted with all of the rest of the world. Stop it.

As always, I will leave the 'hope' to you. I prefer not to count my Fwoopers before they hatch.

In the meantime, life goes on, and my stack of marking threatens to collapse my desk. Why is it that the nincompoops imagine that adding verbose nonsense to an essay might somehow hoodwink me into believing they have the remotest grasp of the subject matter? If the Headmistress would permit me to give negative points for rotten grammar and composition as well as non-existent subject matter, half our students would be repeating their ( ... )

Yes, well, he certainly reminds me of a particular Slytherin I know in a lot of ways.

Trust me, if you think this is appalling, you don't want to try interpreting the essays written by muggle students in today's common vernacular. They seem to have changed the very definitions of words! But, I shall have to delay joining you until later. It's practical exam day for Defense, today, and the fourth years will be here in a few minutes. I already have detention to oversee tonight with two of my seventh years who thought it would be a good idea to start sending slashing hexes at each other instead of the targets this morning.

Thank you, Severus. Once again, you've said exactly what I needed to hear right now.

I'll see you at lunch.

Yours,
Remus
