Got up and on my way to the bathroom noticed that Mary Beth was sitting on the recliner in the living room (this is a mingy little 2-bedroom apt., y'unnerstan'), kind of staring vacantly not exactly quite over her left shoulder at or out of the front window... somethin' not quite right, anyway... went over to give her a 'good morning' kiss

Well, that *is* shocking! I'm so sorry. I wonder what happened to them? Some kind of a bird virus, do you suppose?

I don't really think so, despite recent scares about bird flu and West Nile virus- I suspect something more chemical in nature, and as a matter of fact have been biting my tongue from openly suggesting that her son might have done something- I mean, I really don't know what, I'm just poisoned against the boy (24) and his callous solipsistic attitude toward everything else in the world- I don't like feeling that way about him ← vs. → it wouldn't be beneath him + he wouldn't even need a reason...

I have to stop that. He might have absolutely nothing to do with it. It could have been something wafting over from the next-door or downstairs neighbors or in from the fields... This is California's Central Coast, Salinas is "the Salad Bowl of the World", and we've had several well-publicized leaks (field pesticides) not just this year but in the past month... so who knows? I'm just bitter.
