Oh, hey, more news on the Blake's 7 reboot...and it sounds terrible.

So, there are now 'details' about the newest Blake's 7 revival.

And any vague interest I had is pretty much gone. Because, seriously, what. (no, really, what. Who thought this sounded like a good idea?)

The year is 2136, Blake wakes up on one side of the bed. He reaches for the other side. There’s nobody there. As reality sets in, this handsome ( Read more... )

A deimagined remake of B7 auroramama April 9 2013, 05:50:59 UTC
All the signs of something to dread are showing up, aren't they? I mean, why would someone be against the oppressive interstellar government if they didn't have a dead wife? Let's get rid of actual darkness and grit and replace it with stuff we know people like because millions of them have already watched it for years!

I wish they'd decided to do Avon: A Terrible Aspect instead. At least it would put them to some trouble to make it worse.

Well, that sounds all sorts of terrible, but the 'heroes' part doesn't surprise me. No one in TV today is going to have the balls to make terrorists the good guys (nor would they likely be allowed to, even if they did).

How much I don't want rebooted B7 is pretty high anyway - higher than just about any other show I love that I can think of.

You're right; this is so very typical and tedious and what do they even think made B7 work in the first place? Or presumably they think it didn't and they can rescue it.

Here's hoping desperately that the pilot fails and then they finally stop with this. If they must make new B7, it could at least have the goodness to be a "30 years later" continuation and not expect us to accept substitutes for some of the best TV characters ever seen.

Agreed. I don't want to see a B7 reboot. I can't really express how much I don't want this to exist.

However... I felt that way about the Battlestar Galactica reboot, and the reboot was (after a very annoying intro miniseries that made me want to throw things at it) amazing, for the most part. (It also fell apart mid-season 2, and though it got a lot better again before its S4 end, the showrunner had too much Attention Deficit Disorder to quite understand the continuity of his own series.)

So, maybe, this can be made good. But descriptions make it seem like "how badly can they miss the point of the original?"

A reboot is always an odd thing, because it feels like a swipe at the original for not being good enough - but with B7, I love these characters so much. I don't want other people playing them.

Still, who knows? It is, it has to be said, certainly a terrible press release, if nothing else.

How much I don't want rebooted B7 is pretty high anyway - higher than just about any other show I love that I can think of.... about the same monut as I haven't wanted it? - since they started talking about it... oh, before the start of the millenium.

So I have to admit, I'm still not holding my breath, just crossing my fingers that it dies. Again.

it's like all my worst ideas about what the series could be like just appeared on my f-list. why, as you say, do we need to fucking bother to specify that blake is handsome AND THAT IS WIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. she's not even alive, but don't worry - you won't have to look at someone who isn't beautiful!!!!! not even in a flashback!

i don't even care whether he is or not - obviously i like gareth thomas being handsome in a weird way, but i do understand that this is american television so obviously he's going to be the most handsome guy ever, but you have to specify that he is in a press release? that's the thing that you think is important about blake? the thing you think is worth mentioning as a defining characteristic? couldn't he be driven and charismatic AND (coincidentally) handsome ( ... )

Well, I have never seen the original, so I don't care that much about any of the changes one way or the other because I have no attachment.

Except, ye gads I'm sick of the dead wife trope. So, so very sick of that. It's disappointing. I know why they do it, they get instant cheap angst for their lead male while keeping him available for a new love interest. But it is the very cheapest form of fridging, and it may well be a deal killer for me. (Though probably not. At least not to start. Because space opera.)
