This was lovely. I like how you found a nice balance between the grief everyone was feeling and their need to move forward. I also love how Johnson & Lois are now working for Gwen (that's a Torchwood I'd be happy to see...especially if they added Martha into the mix :D).
You should also know that this piece made me choke up at least twice. Once during Alice's segment and then again when Gwen thought about the labeled boxes (TOSH!!! Ianto! *sobs*).
Oh, Lyssie, I really think this is one of your best fics. Good pacing, good writing, good character voices and reactions to each stage of the grief they're all feeling. Makes me want Torchwood to come back with Gwen and Lois large and in charge. ;)
The hardest was Alice's section--all that anger and pain and grief and no, I can't imagine it will ever get easier for her. This is a really good follow-through from CoE, that same bleak unforgiving tone and yet the need for the world to move on, even if the individuals involved cannot always do so.
Alice's section made me cry a little when writing it, which sort of disturbed me, but worked, I think. I'm not sure I can imagine moving on from something like that (too, I think the show gave her such horrific grief there, it was easy to build upon).
Honestly, it doesn't surprise me if you cried a bit--Alice's storyline is hard, and horrible, and attempting to write anything related to it would seem monumentally difficult to me. so, you know extra commendation to you there. :)
Denise gave herself ten minutes to recover, and then got back to work. Indeed. *shivers*
Alice's section just gutted me.
"You're too inquisitive. I don't need a girl asking twenty questions for every decision I make--even if it would keep me honest."
*gleeful* I just started re-watching and that's what struck me--Lois keeps asking questions, and no, that government job is NOT for her, even without alien invasions and secret death orders.
Gwen's section was also devastating. I like the duality of her feelings about Jack--both blaming him and wanting to make him proud when he returns.
And then Spears, with her small disdain for Riley even while working for her. So much enjoyment of this fic, thanks for linking it!

I love the idea of it being Gwen, Lois, Johnson and Martha--Torchwood always has been sort of ad hoc.
Tosh and Ianto and Owen all make me sniffle still.

I know! :(
In a perfect world, we'd get two new versions of Torchwood: a real-world TW with Gwen & her girls and an after-life TW with the Trio of Awesome :D
Unfortunately, it looks like all we might get is an American TW with Capt. Jack...something I really have no desire to watch.

And the US Torchwood was canned, iirc.
