Since I have about 1,500 pages to read in three weeks, I probably won't be around here much. I could renew my books, but I need goals to take my mind off life for awhile. I have a paper due on female slavery in a few weeks. Ick. I'm also reading The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath, which is totally consuming me right now. After that, I have ( Read more... )

have to agree, the new Tori feels almost like a different person. At first it disappointed me because I feel like Earthquakes and Under the Pink kinda changed my life (not to be dramatic or anything...). But the music just has a different feel to it, now.

Does it ever seem to you like she has three major musical eras? Early Tori (Earthquakes, Pink, and Pele), very sharp and more acoustic, less backup harmonies, angsty and angry. Middle Tori (Choirgirl, Venus), dark and electric, drenched in technological experimentation. Now later Tori (SLG, Scarlet, and now Beekeeper), is more produced, heavily layered, vocally intensive instead of piano-focused, slightly wiser and more patient, edges rubbed smooth. Each are valuable in their own right, but I know people who love a specific period of Tori so much that they tend to ignore the others. (me, I'm not wild on her techno phase, but eh bien)

Beekeeper is growing on me still. I found myself singing along with Parasol and Orange Knickers today, so I think Tori and I might reconcile.

I agree. The new one reminds me very much of Scarlet... certain songs are so similar to each other (Cars and Guitars & Taxi Ride, Sleeps with Butterflies & A Sorta Fairytale, Ribbons Undone & Gold Dust, etc). I like the new cd, but it just brings out a different tone, and I miss the way her older stuff *moved* me. Her lyrics used to just speak to you and inspire, and I can't relate as well to the place she is in now.

Ahh, 1,500 pages. I'd go crazy trying to get that done.

I've only heard "Sleeps with Butterflies," but I love it a lot. And I'm poor so I'll probably end up downloading songs off the new Tori CD.

Have fun at the Ani concert!

Her cd should be easy to find now... A lot of her songs have been floating around online a few weeks now.

Have a good weekend! :)

I have to say I was a little disappointed at the few songs I downloaded a few weeks ago, too. But listening to the cd as a whole kind of changed my perspective. I know how you feel though... Certain things/people are meant for certain phases of our life.

Love you too, hon.
