i'll have to make this an entirely online-based response because the only in-person (more or less) cool likeminded friends i've made were via online too ;D
The first round were sheer luck & a webcomic called Sluggy Freelance. On an impulse (and whilst waiting for the lye water to cool during a soap-making session), i joined the associated irc room and fell into a whole new world of people that i totally connected with.
i found my local knit/crochet/yarn/fiber group through Meet-up and Ravelry (which i found through dA which i got connected to because of Swingerzetta and Rtizy).
After that, i've pretty much only found friends through friends. Classic examples of this are Sor (whom i met through Rtizy) and you (whom i met through Thorgo).
Other than those, i'd still be the shut-in that i was fast becoming before SluggySquad happened.
Hang out at places you like, and chances are people with similar interests are there too. Another thing you can do is just introduce yourself to people, and see what kinds of things they are interested. Since I'm a multifaceted person, and I know you are too, there may be cool people who make good friends, who may only share a few (or none) of your interests, but share other similarities, such as world view, or attitude to government, or just the fact that Starbucks/petrol/lollies etc is too darn expensive these days.
Petrol lollies *are* too darn expensive these days. Ever since the food-safety authorities took them off the market I've had to buy my delicious sugary petrol lollies in shady back allies :'(
