Well, I was praying for sunshine for our friends' wedding. On Saturday, it poured down intermittently (including at 7.30 am, where I got caught a kilometre from anywhere with no cover except my beautiful Christmas present pashmina. It took my trainers three days to dry out), until the wedding was due to start, when the sun came out and suddenly ( Read more... )

My dreams last night included zombies, an enforced threesome and attempting to save the world.

It sounds as if you were chanelling an episode of Torchwood!

I'm looking for a Dickens to try to get me over the dislike I've developed for his writing from having to "do" Oliver Twist for O level. Do you think Bleak House would be a good one?

Heh. I really must get around to watching Torchwood!

I think Bleak House would be a decent one to try. Dickens shows his own hand quite a lot in the narration, with his fury at the self-propelling mess of Chancery and his compassion for the poor. There are (typically for Dickens) a lot of characters, but the plot is pretty interesting once it gets going. Apart from anything else, it's a fascinating detective novel. I'd say go for it.

The last wedding I went to was sort of like that - rain (and storms) until 15 minutes before the wedding, then bright sunshine when it was time for people to sit down.

My husband is on a Dickens kick. He reads "The Christmas Stories" every year, and this year he went out and bought 8 or 9 others to read. He's starting with David Copperfield.

I'll put the tomorrow series on my "to read" list.

Be prepared to lose a couple of days if you read the Tomorrow series. They're fast reads, but there are quite a few books :).

It's fab when that happens - it's like a good omen for the marriage.
