It sounds as if you were chanelling an episode of Torchwood!
I'm looking for a Dickens to try to get me over the dislike I've developed for his writing from having to "do" Oliver Twist for O level. Do you think Bleak House would be a good one?

Heh. I really must get around to watching Torchwood!
I think Bleak House would be a decent one to try. Dickens shows his own hand quite a lot in the narration, with his fury at the self-propelling mess of Chancery and his compassion for the poor. There are (typically for Dickens) a lot of characters, but the plot is pretty interesting once it gets going. Apart from anything else, it's a fascinating detective novel. I'd say go for it.

My husband is on a Dickens kick. He reads "The Christmas Stories" every year, and this year he went out and bought 8 or 9 others to read. He's starting with David Copperfield.
I'll put the tomorrow series on my "to read" list.

rain (and storms) until 15 minutes before the wedding, then bright sunshine when it was time for people to sit down.
It's fab when that happens - it's like a good omen for the marriage.
