On being a singular fannish life form

Sep 27, 2010 16:16

So I see there's new telly out, which means lots of people are getting excited about programmes and people I've never heard of. That's fine; I don't begrudge you this in the slightest. I love seeing people being fannish, even regarding things I know nothing about ( Read more... )

fannish stuff

I saw the BNFs of my fandom seduced by manga, Supernatural, Doctor Who, BSG. (Apologies to Ginsberg)

I know how you feel. I'm not longer in the Harry Potter fandom because all of the journals I used to follow are now obsessed with other things. If I liked them enough, I kept them (shaggydogstail) but some I cut loose (musesfool) because we had nothing in common but the fic.

I guess all you can do is treasure what you had, cause you can't bring it back.

*splutter* re your Ginsberg misquote.

Exactly. I've had a wonderful time here over the past few years!

I could pretty much write exactly the same post, except I don't read fanfic any more and I don't write it.

Re-reading Harry Potter just makes me realise that my love for that series is just so huge that it's unlikely anything else will get that close. I stopped reading HP fanfic at some point after Half Blood Prince because I felt that it was actually screwing up my ability to relate to the source and really it's the source that matters to me.

Actually, I should probably go and seek out some gen fic again, because there are some gen stories that I've loved in the past. Sadly I seem to be over slash, just not interested. I am loving Dr Who but again I'm loving watching; it's fine to talk about it with people but I'm not that interested in the comms.

I have lovely friends who are heavily involved and in some ways it makes me sad that I can't keep up; but that's just the way it is. No point in forcing something if it's not truly who you are.

*hugs*

Yes, this. It's about confluences of time and life experiences and a canon with huge possibilities for exploration and years to do it in. I don't think that will ever happen again to me.

Yes, I think I've been trying, but that's it, exactly. It's not me. And being here, pootling around, is. *hugs back*

This is very much how I feel. Harry Potter was the right fandom for me at the right time. I'd been in other fandoms a bit before, but HP was the one where it really took off for me. DLS is probably my main fandom now. It's less intensive, but then that suits my life better! I've still got HP fics I want to write, but it's a question of time I don't have.

A lot of people feel like that about HP, I am discovering from this post.

Anyway, I like that I can keep an eye on Sayers fandom through you!

Word.

This.

I don't even understand treating a telly thng as a fandom... and when a new film suddenly has a fandom???

I will never have anything but HP, and I am fine.

Sez the person who wrote Wild Target fic. :P

You are one of my fandom stalwarts, and I love you for keeping the love alive!

It was Cherrybomb fic, and there is a difference between me and Shari being silly and running a three person Xmas fest - and Inception having a thousand person comm by the end of opening weekend!!

I know, I was only teasing. ♥

The Inception explosion was pretty impressive, but probably predictable given the subject matter/slashability of the characters.

Yes, me too. I watch TV shows and occasionally read fic for them, but they don't grab me like HP still does. I felt left behind for a long time, too, but eh, no point in that. I like what I like. And HP fandom still needs people, I figure! We can't all leave. :)

Exactly - and there are a whole load of new people still coming in to write and squee alongside us!
