1. Why did I not know that they're making John Marsden's Tomorrow, When the War Began into a movie? The books are brilliant and crackily addictive Australian YA, and the trailer made me gleeful. Hopefully anyone who's interested can see the trailer here2. So, Law and Order UK. Anyone seen it? Opinions ( Read more... )

OMG! My favourite series of Australian books. They've been wanting to make the movies for a while, but he refused to sell the rights when they wanted to change Lee's ethnicity to aboriginal. They must be doing them properly, or he never would have sold them.

John Marsden is my author BFF (we emailed for a while when I finished the books).

Also, holy shit! I have TEARS in my eyes and goosebumps. It looks amazing!

"What do your instincts tell you?"

"That it's time to go to war."

Oh, Ellie!

(*rolls eyes* 'Cause, yeah, doesn't matter what the ethnicity is, as long as we have the token ethnic, right? But yay, looks like they have Lee right this time!)

So glad you like the look of the trailer! It made me pretty squeeful.

I assume you read the Ellie Chronicles as well as the Tomorrow books - did you like them?

I've not read anything by Marsden apart from Tomorrow+Ellie, but I don't think I've ever devoured a series so quickly before or since. I was averaging a book a day for a while!

"Winter" and "So Much To Tell You" are two of my other favourites of his.

I am still reading the Ellie Chronicles. I have to read Incurable and the second one as well, but I'm finding them a little harder to get into because there's less hope and kick arsery in them.

some of my favourite books growing up. heartwarmingly australian.
if they bugger things up in the movie i'm going to be pissed. make no mistake. they've cast caitlin stasey as ellie, for one thing. not the right character for that actor.

I know nothing about the actors except that they all seem to have been on Neighbours or Home & Away at some point. :P

Did you watch the trailer? I thought it looked pretty good, except that Homer seems way too attractive.

hehe, well caitlin stacey was a neighbours girl - that's why i knew her.

i did. i didn't miss the crafty top-taking-off-tits shot, and it made me mad. and i always felt homer would be attractive, but not that he would look like that. i imagined a more butch and slightly dark-skinned greek in him. and ellie... does not look like caitlin stacey. i know i'm harping on the same thing, and i think caitlin stacey is a good actress, but... no. The Connie (Corrie? can't remember which) girl looks ok, but the actress is british which rankles on principle :P

This all makes me think I should read the books again. I was quite young when I read them so I can't really remember them that well.

Yeah, but I usually have weird taste in men. :P My crushes are generally on people like Daniel Day Lewis, Jarvis Cocker and other weedy, non-mainstream types!

I only saw a few eps of Law & Order last year, and while I desperately wanted to like it due to Jamie Bamber and Freema Agyeman, I couldn't help but feel it... lacked something. My friend thought the show concept just didn't translate well to the UK law/order system. :S

I was excited when I saw Freema was in it, too!

That's true - and we do have a history of our own style of police-procedural/courtroom drama programmes in the UK.

Maybe I'll just keep an eye out if it turns up over here (in Oz).

Who would obsess over Jamie Bamber? Not me! ;)

I've seen the first 7 episodes of L&O:UK aka the First Season in the UK and really loved it. Which is incredible given I've never been able to sit through a single episode of the US version (any flavour) in the 20 yrs it's been on tv. Even though there have been actors on it I like.

I really like the characters -- and yes, Matt Devlin makes me swoon. I also love Freema on it and Ben Daniels is growing on me big time. (I like Bradley Walsh, Harriet Walters and Bill Paterson too, but not *that* way).

I have both UK series sets and then inexplicably, the entire series (all 13 episodes) was released on dvd in the US as a Target store exclusive 2 weeks ago, so I had to buy the Region 1 version as well. I am pathetic.

I didn't know Harriet Walter was in it, too!

Ack, why do I have no Lee icons over here?
