Because just walking by the YA novels these days make me rage...

Because my flist has way more patience than I do when it comes to looking for new books...

Anyone have a recommendation for a book (or two) in the same vein as Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson books?

I need to buy my sister a Christmas present, and she's already read The Red Pyramid  and The Lost Hero. I've tried browsing the YA section looking for ( Read more... )

christmas, sci-fi, fantasy

I haven't read the Percy Jackson books, but...

Diane Duane's Young Wizards series (So You Want to Be a Wizard, etc.)

The Pendragon Adventures

My brother's a big fan of Percy Jackson and both of the above, and his current obsession is The Hunger Games.

I also love the Young Wizards series. I need to read the most recent novel.

The Unicorn Series by Tanith Lee Black Unicorn, Gold Unicorn and Red Unicorn are excellent stories about Tanaquil, a Winry-type witch, and her adventures with three different unicorns (one which she 'builds', one which is a war machine and the other...well...). I think that's the only Lee YA series available in the States at this point. Her Wolf Tower series isn't quite as fun, but enjoyable. Tanaquil's a far more engaging character, though, IMO.

Diana Wynn Jones writes some lovely things, too, and they should be on the shelves and easy to find. Like...Howl's Moving Castle and Dogsbody.

Weren't the Tanith Lee books out of print? I'd heard that. ...If they're not, I want them.

Amazon had the first one, so I'm assuming the others could be acquired?

*just looked* They are not! I swear, that's what I was told by a friend talking about how much she loved the books. I know what's on my list now!

Diana Wynne Jones's Chrestomanci quartet. Heck, just about anything by Diana Wynne Jones -- she's wonderful. I also third the Duane Young Wizards stuff. Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom series might also serve your purposes. Hmm. Terry Pratchett's Wee Free Men and sequels? Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles?

How's the Grimm Legacy book you mentioned? The premise sounded like a lot of fun.

I just finished it. It's light stuff, more plotty than charactery, with some teen romance. Fun, but not much more than that. Might be worth a look, depending on the age/tastes of your sibling.

hmmm this year the YA books have left me cold but the "heir" series by Cinda Williams Chima is pretty good (they left me cold because dystopias are the new cool thing, Hunger games is probably the best out of that crowd)

Anthony Horowitz's series (Evil Star, Nightrise) wasn't half bad (I should go finish that)

Howl's Moving Castle and House of Many ways by Diana Wynne Jones are good (the second book castle in the air? i didn't care for)

The Alchemyst: the secrets of the immortal Nicholas Flamel and the rest of that series by Michael Scott and the Maximum Ride: series by James Patterson aren't bad

Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas series is enjoyable and the parasol protectorate books (steampunk vampire/werewolf stuff) isn't bad either

I did see the Heir series on display. Good to know they're decent.

I think the Parasol Protectorates are hysterical, but when I was my sister's age (13), I didn't really 'get' the whole Victorian humour, so maybe next time.
