Why is it that when a middle-aged person or retiree is treated differently or unfairly because of their age, it's "ageism" or "age discrimination" but when a younger person is treated the same, it is simply passed off as being because they're "irresponsible" or "just too young" ?

Welcome. to. my. world. Imagine being 22 and serving as a senior reviewer for significant military exercises around the world on behalf of the Department of State. My counterparts at DOD are all LTCs. I do good work. Yet because I look like I'm 20 and I have less time in the chair, my credibility suffers, I get paid less, and when I struggle with the fact that I'm outperforming most other people around me and being compensated with less, I'm told that I need to be "patient" because my career is "just starting."
