Eee, this is so fantastic. I'm always longing for Caroline/Elena pre-series stories and this really hits the spot. Your Caroline POV is really lovely and this passage especially is so poignant:

Mostly she’s just glad to have this Elena back. The one that smiles and laughs and thinks about things that don’t matter, who sometimes does things just to get attention just like Caroline, who drinks tequila like its water, and dances even when there isn’t any music to be heard.

(She’s selfishly missed her friend, despite Elena never having really disappeared.)

omg i'm so sorry it took me so long to reply to this; i've been super busy and school just started but i kept remembering and craving the reading. and this was perfect! ah, pre-series girls and in such a good and realistic environment. i loved the pov of caroline - everything from her jealousy and her needs to have elena pay attention to her was great. and just so lovely.

This is really good. The characterization of both Caroline & Elena is excellent and I've always had the notion that something like this went on between them.

I've attempted to write a couple of things, and find Elena's character quite challenging (but then writing anyone is challenging to me).

I feel like your story fits quite well in the pre-series timeframe. There must have been a whole bunch of unsureness for Elena's friends that summer.

I don't know how I even stumbled upon it, but I always like reading different people's interpretations of ships and I thought it was really interesting. And I mean really, some fanvids are just asking to be over analyzed. :D

I love Elena's character but I totally agree, she's a challenge to write. I have great respect for all the stories/authors I've found that do write her so well. Because my brain doesn't let me. (LOL, agreed. Writing in general is a challenge.)

Oh, thank you. That was so what I was trying for, and I agree. In the pilot you can totally see that everyone is still trying to figure out how to act around Elena even after all the months that passed, so I can only imagine how it was so much closer to the actual death itself.

Absolutely lovely; I can totally see this happening pre-series and I really love how you captured the complicated pre-series vibe--Caroline jealous and resentful of Elena and frustrated that she won't respond to Caroline's attempt to bring her out of her depression, which is just, very pre-series Caroline? It's slightly insesitive and not fully understanding Elena but she means well ultimately. You did a great job, I love this.
