Why do people always bring up Fred Phelps when they want to put down Christianity or Evangelicals.....The guy is a whacko with a following of less than 50 people, and any "public preacher" repudiates him.
You got it half right....public education IS badly managed, but in no way is it underfunded. (i don't mean that quite as nasty as it may sound in your minds ear :D )
Do you know the story of where the expression "throwing the baby out with the bath water" comes from?
I have been thinking about some of our discussions, and I confess that I really do know a number of people (read men) that feel the way that bothers you (like the cretans you quoted) but the reason I had to think about it is because I ignore them, and give them no credibility whatsoever. It's like they don't really exist. When any come to our church they are humored in such a way that they don't stay long :D
As the daughter of an educator as well as an ex-public school employee I have to greatly disagree on publics schools and fund-age.. but I think I'll let Sunny's reply cover it for me.
Thing with you not noticing these men is somewhat scary to me. I think it is easier to ignore when it is not directed at you both as a child and as an adult. I think that ignoring it instead of confronting it head on gives the impression that it is legitimate and that is why I think it turns people away. It may not be because these guys are the majority, but there are enough and they are not dis-claimed but the majority either.
oh and reason I brought Fred up is because all though they don't agree with his tactics on this site, they do agree with his message. I think there are more out there who agree, but just aren't as vocal as the Phelps clan are. SO we need to show what his says as un-scriptural as as to show those less vocal that this is not what Christ died for.
You misunderstand me, one has to notice these type of people. Ignoring them by not letting them have leadership roles etc makes them ineffectual. Sorry I was not clear.
I beg to differ that education is Not underfunded! I am a public school teacher, our C.O.L.A (cost of living adjustment) is scheduled to be 2.4% this year, looks good, but......that is not taking into account the 8.2% cut from the incoming money that was already allotted to our schools....that equates to approximately $650,000 for my 1 school school district....we are having to let teachers go, cut our supplies, and cut out going to trainings. We have been told to tighten our belts but still "get the job done" I get to work at 7:30 each morning and leave at 3:30, during that time I take a 30 minute lunch, and a 5 minute break. While I am there I am actively teaching, not sitting and reading the newspaper or talking to colleagues as some might think. When I go home I am not finished, I take with me all of the papers to grade to show my 90 students what mistakes that they have made in order for them to grow and learn. It blows me away when people who are not in public education take a stance when they have no first hand knowledge

You are talking about something different, you are talking about teachers salaries. There is such an believable amount of waste of funds in public education, that any business in the real world would not last. Sorry while I personally am not in education, I have quite a number of relatives that are, and do have close enough knowledge of what the situation is.......but it is limited to California and Oregon.
I hope this doesn't sound mean, because it is not intended as such. I realize that being front lines in an institution that is primarily funded by property taxes is stressful. I come from a family of librarians and believe me, they are going through the same thing
