2) I believe that everyone should be able to cook a meal, sew on a button, scrub a toilet, check your oil, and hang a shelf.
3) I believe that life is not fair, and while that thought may be distasteful, it's okay and we need to just get over it.
4) I believe that when we have a pet, we take on responsibility for their care to the day they die, and if we can't keep them for some reason, that we're responsible for making sure that they're still cared for.
5) I believe that we need to make more room in our schools to teach art and music, because art and music are a large part of what makes us human.
*grinning* I believe I've read this somewhere before...
That said, I really like your manifesto. Particularly #3 - I think it's actually rather comforting to realize that life is not fair, because I'd rather not have to think that some of the more terrible things that happened to me are things that, in fairness, I deserved. kwim?
The best formulation of that I've heard was from a line of dialogue from the Babylon 5 TV series: "You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."
1. I believe that most people are inherently decent and kind.
2. I believe that most folks who aren't decent and kind should be pitied rather than hated.
3. I believe that the Universe at large is a random and oftentimes awful place, but it's our job as thinking creatures to be decent and kind, just because.
4. I believe that seeing the glass as half empty is more realistic than most folks realize.
5. I believe that the Tricksters love me, but I have yet to figure out why.
6. I believe I need to give this more thought because it feels as though my beliefs aren't as solidly codified and easy to disperse as yours.
