WOW. This is amazing. "Sweet" is amazing. I'm sorry, I'm about to gush *g*, but I think you're an incredible writer. The gorgeous imagery, the hopelessness, the restrained distance in this piece -- all are perfectly drawn, and the language is absolutely beautiful. So, so wonderful!
I'm new to HP, too -- I've only been reading for the last month or so -- but I've been very impressed with the writers in this fandom. Not to mention the volume! I could hang out here for years! *g* Anyway, I wanted to let you know that how much I loved this, and thank you for writing it. I hope you plan to write more HP stories -- I"ll watch for them.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed Sweet and this fic as well. I tend to switch back and form between comedy and angst, and comedy comes a bit more naturally to me, so the angst fics sometimes make people want to back away slowly. That's a limitation of my writing, though, not the pairing, since it seems to me that part of the zing of the Harry/Draco pairing comes from the way it teeters on the verge of tragedy, particularly after HBP.
Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed this, and welcome to HP! Yes, there's a huge wealth of stories that have been written in the fandom, though the fandom is in something of a state of change right now as some of its established writers move on to other things (you can hardly blame them, this fandom has been around for a loooooong time). Still, the number and quality of fics is pretty intimidating! But the universe is so rich that I think there's always a lot to be said about it.
It flows like poetry, without being sappy, and without taking away Harry's and Draco's voices. You were able to keep things delicate and urgent without taking away the intimacy of the specific moments for Harry.
The use of seasons worked brilliantly for you as well, particularly how the imagery of Draco himself matched the types of light that you describe. I had never thought of Draco's coloring as particularly fitting for anything but winter, and you have changed my mind. I also really appreciate your Neville. It's always so refreshing to have someone show him with depth and sensitivity, rather than just weak and a little sad.
Thank you so much for this lovely and detailed comment; I'm so sorry that I didn't get to it sooner (I'm a bit of a moving target in the summer).
I'm really glad the business with the seasons worked for you; I worried quite a bit about whether the season references would just be a stupid device rather than something that genuinely contributed to the story. I still worry about that question, I suppose, but what's fanfic for if not to experiment with the Possibly Hokey? At any rate, I thought that the fic was about time -- how we don't have as much as we think, how it slips away without our really noticing it -- so using the seasons in this way didn't seem too horribly out of bounds.
Glad you liked the Draco, too; he will never be nice, I don't think, if he's to have any relationship with canon, but Dumbledore seems to have thought him worth saving in HBP, so perhaps there's something there. In this fic I was speculating on what that something might be. Thanks again for stopping by to comment!
This... is beautiful. :) It breaks me a little inside to think he's dead, but ah... i just love that last bit "It's dead," he said, and tossed it away. It hit me hard. But oh, so wonderfully. I shall hunt for more fics from you. :)
*low whistle* This is fantastic! You said just enough that the things you didn't say were all the more poignant for it. I'm friending you in the hopes that you'll friend me back, so I can read more of your lovely writing.
This was beautiful and powerful, especially that last paragraph. I would love to know what really happened to Draco but at the same time I'm glad you didn't divulge it.
