Our visits to the Farm Co-op stand have begun. We signed up for a family share of fruit and vegetables, which we're splitting with my mom and J-chan. Each week we pick up our share, brought to us by local farms. Even just a third of it is enough to fill my produce bins. So far we've had scallions, bok choy, lettuce (2 kinds), chinese cabbage, beets ( Read more... )

Ah, I'm totally jealous...although I'd really have no idea what to do with that many varieties of vegetables. I've always had to force myself to eat fruit and vegetables. I know they're healthy and all, but I hate them. I grew up on processed frozen meals and I can't change my preferences no matter how hard I try. Most of what I buy ends up in the rabbit cage because I won't eat it and it eventually goes bad, LOL

What do you do with kohlrabi and chard? Is that a stir-fry thing? They go all soggy and limp if you do anything else, don't they?

I do love my veggies! Most of the greens I stir-fry, saute, or use in soups. Kohlrabi is really good. I had it for the first time last year thanks to the Co-op. I found a number of recipes for it on Recipezaar.com and it's become my new fave. You can eat it raw (I made a slaw out of it with apples and carrots) or cooked (I like it braised with onions and finished with milk to make it creamy). It tastes somewhere between a mild turnip and cabbage. Not as gassy though ^_^.
I can't wait till the blueberry crop comes in. Last year they were phenomenal!

Oh yeah, SOUP! I forgot. Caldo Gallego.

I don't know what turnips taste like, LOL

Blueberries are ok. I don't think we get ripe ones in Florida. They're sour, sometimes you get a couple of sweet ones in the batch, which I think is what everyone else in the country has all the time. I was reading Vanilla Garlic's blog ( http://vanillagarlic.blogspot.com/2009/06/pits.html ) and until then, I didn't know cherries had a smell. They're just generically sweet. No flavor. No smell. Probably picked unripe and shipped or that brand is what's sold because it travels well.

Hey, I've got some Asian eggplants growing in my garden! I don't really have the hang of them yet, but I'm getting better.
